![]() The experts received reports that women who report violence to the police are told that they “should not complain”, that they “probably deserved being beaten” and that “such matters are private and should remain within the family.” The joint report by the experts revealed that women and girl victims of gender-based violence are being sentenced to atrocious physical and psychological suffering, with limited access to any protection resources, such as shelters. “Women and girls have no recourse to justice, and very limited access to female lawyers, who have not been issued licenses unlike their male colleagues,” they said. The UN experts expressed grave concern about the absence of legal protections for women and girls, and the normalisation of discrimination and violence against them. The imposed extreme modesty rules of “proper hijab”, meaning a non-fitted black garment with face covering, or not leaving the home without reason, and mandatory maharam (male guardian) policy adds to a controlling environment in which it is difficult for women and girls to move freely outside their homes, the report by the experts said. In Afghanistan today, girls and women are denied education beyond primary level, banned from working outside the home in most sectors, prohibited from accessing public baths, parks, and gyms, and moving freely around the country. They met with Afghan women and men in a variety of sectors, representatives of UN agencies, international NGOs and de facto officials at the central and provincial level. The UN experts travelled to Afghanistan from 27 April to 4 May and visited Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif. The report calls on the de facto authorities to respect and restore women’s and girls’ human rights and urges the increased attention of the international community and the UN to the widespread discrimination against women and girls in Afghanistan. In a joint report by the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan and the Working Group on discrimination against women and girls presented to the UN Human Rights Council today, the experts, Richard Bennett and Dorothy Estrada-Tanck, said the plight of women and girls in the country was the worst globally. “Women and girls in Afghanistan are experiencing severe discrimination that may amount to gender persecution – a crime against humanity – and be characterised as gender apartheid, as the de facto authorities appear to be governing by systemic discrimination with the intention to subject women and girls to total domination,” the experts said. GENEVA (19 June 2023) – Relentless edicts issued by the Taliban since taking power in Afghanistan in August 2021 have severely restricted the rights of women and girls and suffocated every dimension of their lives, UN experts* said today. ![]()

I ask, why would I scare myself? Life is scary enough, why force myself to be afraid of what’s in the dark? Comedy also benefits from those really high stakes, but reacting to them is important. I can’t watch horror movies, I have to cover my eyes. People are dying, and you’re afraid for your life. Both genres benefit from really high stakes, and in a horror movie the stakes couldn’t be higher. ![]() I think the idea of nervous laughter is definitely at the seed of it. I think horror and comedy are intrinsically linked, like when you get so scared that you have to laugh. What do you think it is about the horror genre that’s so ripe for parody? Yes, I’d enjoy it, but it’s still gone. It was like saying good-bye forever to old friends. I’d forgotten how attached I’d become to the characters, Zoë (Gina Torres), Inara (Morena Baccarin), Kaylee (Jewel Staite), Simon (Sean Maher), and even the really annoying Jayne (Adam Baldwin). Mal (Nathan Fillion) took some damage, both physically and emotionally, but they all made it, repaired Serenity, and took off for further adventures we’ll never see. However, I absolutely didn’t see Wash’s (Alan Tudyk) death coming (Tudyk is still alive) which was even worse. I knew that actor Ron Glass, who played Shepherd Book, passed away in 2016, but watching his character die on the small screen was horrific. Yesterday, again at the public library, I happened to chance upon the “epilogue” of the too soon canceled classic, Serenity (2005), and no, not the 2019 film currently in theaters by the same name which I have no intention of seeing. Joss Whedon not only created a (rather short-lived) legend, but unwittingly presented the world with an anthem for the libertarian party (which is very much what Whedon isn’t). Needless to say, it was magnificent, a sort of science fiction meets western theme, with sinister, bloated government conspiracy thrown in. I’d heard of the television show Firefly for some time, so when I got the chance to rent the entire series from my local public library a number of years ago, I jumped at the chance. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Stainless steel grids with protective rubber feet are the most durable and popular choice. Evans, a contemporaneous journalist and magician, described the book as a "hodge-podge of absurdities, pseudo-science, mythology and folk-lore, arranged in helter-skelter fashion, with an utter disregard of logical sequence." Fritze considers Isis Unveiled to be a work of pseudohistory. For example, Blavatsky cites the work of the Byzantine historian George Kedrenos, although her primary source was not his Synopsis Historion but the less impressive-sounding Conjuror's Magazine, or Magical and Physiognomical Mirror Volume II printed 1791–1793. Modern Theosophists hold the book as a revealed work dictated to Blavatsky by Theosophy's Masters. Blavatsky later asserted the correctness of her statements on reincarnation and the constitution of man in Isis Unveiled, attributing the resulting confusion and alleged contradictions to the more superficial or simplified conceptions of the ideas in Isis Unveiled compared to those of later works. Specifically, the few and-according to many-ambiguous statements on reincarnation as well as the threefold conception of man as body, soul and spirit of Isis Unveiled stand in contrast to the elaborate and definite conception of reincarnation as well as the sevenfold conception of man in The Secret Doctrine (1888). In later theosophical works some of the doctrines originally stated in Isis Unveiled appeared in a significantly altered form, drawing out confusion among readers and even causing some to perceive contradiction. Blavatsky's combination of original insights, backed by scholarly and scientific sources, accomplished a major statement of modern occultism's defiance of materialist science. ![]() In doing so, Isis Unveiled reflected many contemporary controversies-such as Darwin's theories on evolution and their impact on religion-and engaged in a discussion that appealed to intelligent individuals interested in religion but alienated from conventional Western forms. Blavatsky writes in the preface that Isis Unveiled is "a plea for the recognition of the Hermetic philosophy, the anciently universal Wisdom-Religion, as the only possible key to the Absolute in science and theology." It follows the Renaissance notion of prisca theologia, in that all these religions purportedly descend from a common source the ancient "Wisdom-Religion". Volume II, Theology, discusses the similarity of Christian scripture to Eastern religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, the Vedas, and Zoroastrianism. Volume I, The "Infallibility" of Modern Science, discusses occult science and the hidden and unknown forces of nature, exploring such subjects as forces, elementals, psychic phenomena, and the Inner and Outer Man. ![]() Isis Unveiled is divided into two volumes. The work was originally entitled The Veil of Isis, a title which remains on the heading of each page, but had to be renamed once Blavatsky discovered that this title had already been used for an 1861 Rosicrucian work by W.
